Obama’s Choice at Housing Agency

This one of the news from President Barack Obama in North Carolina November nominated top banking regulator, Joseph Smith, the lead Federal Housing Finance Agency. But Mr. Smith ran afoul of several Republicans who voiced concerns about whether Mr. Smith should be sufficient independence from the Obama administration to exercise. The spokesman said that Mr. Smith faces opposition from Sen. Richard Shelby (R., Ala.), who suggested that he would be “a tool of the administration.” Mr. Shelby and other Republicans feared Mr Smith, the pressure on Fannie and Freddie to slash outstanding balance for distressed homeowners to increase.

The FHFA is independent but faces a difficult balancing act, because the government effectively owns Fannie and Freddie, a rescue that has cost taxpayers $ 134,000,000 to date. The Housing Finance Agency, aims to stem the losses can sometimes conflict with the agenda of the White House by reducing foreclosures. Some Senate staff members have questioned whether Mr. Smith was a better choice than Mr. DeMarco, who has opposed allowing the companies to participate in initiatives that can lead to greater losses. Mr. Smith, who served as top banking regulator North Carolina since 2002, helped implement some of the nation’s first regulations to protect borrowers from predatory lenders.
